FG’s borrowings push money supply to record ₦108.96 trillion – CBN

Nigeria’s Broad Money Supply (M2) jumped by 51% year-on-year, reaching ₦108.96 trillion in November 2024, largely driven by the Federal Government’s borrowings from the private sector, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This marked a significant rise from ₦72.03 trillion recorded in November 2023. The CBN’s Money and Credit Statistics report released on Monday, December 30, highlighted a six-month upward trend in M2, which momentarily declined in October before rebounding by 1.2% in November. “Broad Money Supply represents cash, demand deposits, savings deposits, and time deposits,” the report clarified. Quasi-money, which includes savings and time deposits, saw a marginal rise of 1.96% to ₦72.7 trillion. Demand deposits surged by 34.4% year-on-year to ₦31.6 trillion, while currency outside banks soared by 50.9% to ₦4.65 trillion. Ogun Police rescue 7-year-old girl from kidnappers, arrest suspects

The Police Command in Ogun says it has rescued a seven-year-old girl, Mercy Akande , who was abducted recently at Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area (LGA) of the state. The Command’s spokesperson, SP Omolola Odutola , said in a statement on Sunday in Ota that the girl was rescued at Ayetoro Town in Ogun. Odutola said the girl was rescued by the Police anti-kidnapping team, led by the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo . “The suspects who abducted the innocent girl were also arrested in the course of rescuing the victim,” she said. The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has intercepted 19 suspected stowaways attempting to illegally migrate to Europe. The ship’s Information Officer, Lt. The Police Command in Benue has confirmed the arrest of a native doctor, Veror Orduen, and an accomplice driver, Aondoaver Viaga, over the alleged theft of a company truck. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says all denominations of naira banknotes currently in circulation remain indefinitely valid as legal tender and cannot expire or be phased out. A statement on Friday by CBN’s Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Mrs Sidi Ali Hakama , said all banknotes including the old and new designs of N1,000, N500, and N200 were valid.
