Wike’s loyalists threaten defection as Atiku moves to avert PDP collapse

Atiku has moved to pacify aggrieved members, but many are threatening to dump the PDP ahead of the 2023 elections. The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to degenerate as political leaders loyal to Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State are threatening to dump the party. The politicians have said that if Wike defects, they will follow him and also mobilise other members to join them. This is coming barely 24 hours after Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom and former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose criticised the party. While Ortom criticised the PDP and the party’s presidential candidate , Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for allegedly betraying Wike, Fayose drummed support for a southern presidency, saying it’s the turn of the southern region to produce the next president of Nigeria. Why PDP members are angry Pulse had earlier reported that the crisis in the PDP started when Atiku chose Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate despite the recommendation

PDP in disarray as crisis over Atiku’s selection of Okowa worsens

Only two out of 13 governors of the party were present at the inauguration of the PDP campaign council for the upcoming governorship election in Osun State yesterday. The crisis over the emergence of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to fester as things appear to be falling apart for the opposition party. Earlier in June, the Presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar picked Okowa as his running mate against the recommendation of the committee set up to recommend a Vice Presidential candidate for him. The committee according to multiple reports recommended Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State as Atiku’s running mate but the former Vice President decided to go for Okowa. The development thereafter generated acrimony and disagreement among party leaders as some of them called for the removal of the national chairman of the party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu. On Wednesday, June 29, 2022, there were speculat

Why is Wike important to PDP?

The betrayal from Tambuwal, other southern governors, and the PDP itself, has left Wike sour enough to either become a one man pack, or find a new group of friends. Betrayal, in politics, is a risk every player takes while forging alliances. In the interest-diven game, selfishness is fair and expected; hence, what befell the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, at the People Democratic Party primaries can be a tagged 'fair play'. But from the governor's perspective, the more humane perspective, values have been bridged and lines have been crossed. The PDP has tendered public apologies to pacify this key member, but he has remained silent on his next move. How PDP Betrayed Wike Governor Wike has, no doubt, worked for the PDP. He was instrumental in ushering Samuel Ortom, Aminu Tambuwal, and Godwin Obaseki into the PDP; where some became governors under the party. He particularly did a lot of campaigning and offered massive support to Tambuwal, which (arguably) contributed

Lawyer ditches 'native doctor' outfit, says 'I'm led by spirit'

The human rights lawyer caused quite a stir last week when he attended a Supreme Court proceeding donned in a native doctor-like attire. A human rights activist and lawyer, Malcolm Omirhobo , has ditched his signature African traditional worshipper-like attire for normal lawyer's dress code. Omirhobo hit the headlines last Thursday when he sauntered into a Supreme Court session decked out in his black lawyer gown, wearing a gourd with cowries around his neck and a red wrapper tied around his waist. He told the press at the Supreme Court that his choice of clothing was an expression of his fundamental human rights as prescribed by a recent judgement of the Supreme Court which permits all Nigerians to showcase their way of worship and the use of hijab in schools and public places. However, when he appeared before Justice Tijani Ringim on Monday, June 27, 2022, wearing the same 'native doctor' attire, the Judge declined to hear his case before the court. Was this the re

Contrary to what some people have been saying, you don’t necessarily need a high school diploma to get... - Kperogi As the 2023 elections draw near, media scholar, Farooq Kperogi , on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, questioned why Bola Tinubu , presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), did not participate in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme even when he was eligible to do so. Kperogi has probed further, asking why the APC chieftain did not participate in the mandatory NYSC when he was younger than 30 at the time he earned his bachelor’s degree. “People who’re questioning Tinubu’s Chicago State University degree are barking up the wrong tree. “A Bola Ahmed Tinubu indeed graduated from there after earning a 2-year community college diploma from Richard J.
