Agege LG to immortalise late veteran journalist, Animashaun

The Agege Local Government in Lagos State is to immortalise the late journalist, Alhaji Kola Animashaun. The local government said it would commence a yearly essay contest by pupils of public junior secondary schools in the community to immortalise the late veteran journalist. Animashaun, a popular columnist and former Chairman of Editorial Board of The Vanguard, died on May 30 at the age of 80. He hailed from Agege. Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, the Chairman of Agege Local Government, made the promise when he led a delegation of the council members to pay a condolence visit to the bereaved family in Dopemu on Sunday. They were received by the widow, Mrs Silfat Animashaun, Mr Adeboye Animashaun and Mrs Opeyemi Sarumi, son and daughter of the deceased, respectively. Repentant bandits surrender 216 rifles in Zamfara

A total of 216 rifles mostly AK47 have been recovered by Zamfara Government from bandits terrorizing innocent people in the state. Council urges Gov. Ayade to allocate 55% appointments to youths

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Cross River Chapter, has called on Gov. Ben Ayade of the state to allocate 55 per cent of political appointments into his cabinet to qualified youths in the state. Chairman of the State Branch of NYCN, Mr Ndiyo Ndiyo, made the appeal in Calabar while briefing newsmen on Sunday in Calabar. According to Ndiyo, Ayade should consider youths between the ages of 18 and 35 and the other percentage to persons between the ages of 35 and 50 to complement his new cabinet. Fire guts 150MVA TCN transformer in Edo

Fire on Sunday destroyed 150MVA transformer belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) at the 330/132/33KVA substation along Sapele Road, Benin. A staff of TCN, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the fire started at about 8a.m on Sunday morning, adding that the cause of the fire was not yet known. An eyewitness, Mr Osaigbovo Ikponmwosa , told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the transformer exploded at 8a.m and fire started. Ikponmwosa said: ” we have been here since the fire started and the state fire service is not here to help curtail the spread of the fire .” According to Ikponmwosa, it is a pity that TCN substation in Edo that controls more than two states does not have its own fire fighting equipment in case of fire outbreak like this. Gov. Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi has commended youths for complementing security efforts of security agencies through community policing to secure the state. Social Media: Police warn mischief-makers to steer-clear of Enugu

The Police Command in Enugu State has warned mischief-makers using social media to cause disaffection to steer-clear of the state. ECOWAS adopts 'ECO' as name of single currency

The Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Saturday adopted ECO as the name of the single currency to be issued in January 2020. The leaders at their 55th Ordinary Session in Abuja endorsed the name while congratulating the Ministerial Committee on the Single Currency for the considerable progress recorded in the implementation of the revised roadmap. In the communiqué read by Mr Mustapha Suleiman , Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Authority instructed the ECOWAS Commission to work in collaboration with West African Monetary Agency. The leaders also instructed the commission to work with West African Monetary Institute and the central banks to accelerate the implementation of the revised roadmap with regard to the symbol of the single currency. Army conducts sanitation to mark 2019 celebration in Rivers

The Nigerian Army on Saturday carried out sanitation at designated areas in Obio/Akpor area of Rivers as part of activities to mark the 2019 Nigerian Army Day celebration (NADCEL). Soldiers, who turned out in large numbers cleaned the busy Rumuokoro market, car park road and surrounding environment. The Commander of 6 Division Garrison, Nigerian Army Port Harcourt, Brig.-Gen. The Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government have elected President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger as the chair of ECOWAS for a one-year term. Mahamadou was elected at the 55th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS leaders on Saturday in Abuja, taking over from the outgone President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria. A communiqué read by Mr Mustapha Suleiman , Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the leaders lauded Buhari for his unrelenting commitment to regional integration. The authority also agreed to hold its next ordinary session on Dec. 21 in Abuja. The presidents of 13 of the 15 heads of state were in attendance for the session. President Buhari to constitute multi-stakeholder committee on communal clashes

The Presidency says President Muhammadu Buhari has begun consultations for an inclusive stakeholder committee that will thoroughly interrogate issues that fuel communal conflicts across the country. Rape Allegations: Police ask victims to file complaints

Police say they need complaints from victims or witnesses to proceed with rape charges against Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo. Following rape allegations levied against the senior pastor of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA) Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, the police in Abuja have said it would require a formal complaint against the preacher before a criminal action could be taken against him. NAF destroys insurgents’ hideouts in Borno

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says its Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has destroyed terrorists’ hideouts and killed some fighters at Gobara and Bakassi in Borno. Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, added that the operation was conducted on Friday in separate air raids. According to Daramola, the settlements were two of the targets selected for attack in the intensive air interdiction operations launched by the ATF on Wednesday. 2019 Army Day: Soldiers in Lagos defy early morning rain to clean-up Tinubu Square in Lagos

The Nigerian Army on Saturday defied the early morning downpour and deployed its personnel to Tinubu Square in Lagos for a clean-up exercise as part of the 2019 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chief of Army Standards and Evaluation, Maj.-Gen. Adekunle Shodunke, led the soldiers in a massive sanitation exercise on the streets of Lagos Island. Shodunke represented the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai at the occasion. Effective service: Air Force urges personnel to engage in physical exercise

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has charged its personnel to continually engage in fitness exercise to make them effective in the discharge of their constitutional duties. The Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, gave the charge on Saturday in Abuja at the end of the NAF 2019 Second Quarter Route March Exercise. Banditry: Troops kill 8 bandits, arrest 17 collaborators in Sokoto

No fewer than eight bandits have been killed and 17 other collaborators arrested by troops of Operation HARBIN KUNAMA III under the 8 Division Nigerian Army, Sokoto. The General Officer Commanding (GOC) the Division, Maj.-Gen. Hakeem Otiki, told the newsmen in Sokoto on Saturday that those apprehended were bandits’ informants and logistics suppliers. Otiki said five bandits’ camps and 25 motorcycles were destroyed in the operation. He commended members of the various vigilante groups and local hunters for their support to troops operating in their villages and communities. Crisis: Enugu State Government bans IPMAN’s activities

Enugu State government has placed a ban on the activities of the state chapter of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN). The Permanent Secretary, General Administration, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Josephine Onyia disclosed this in a press statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Enugu. Onyia said that the ban was with immediate effect and would last until the state government gave further notice. Troops rescue 8 women, 6 children after raids on Boko Haram camps
