Coronavirus and the Nigerian music industry

On the 27th of February 2020, the Federal Ministry of Health confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in Nigeria. The World Health Organisation had declared the virus as a pandemic on January 30th of that year, and by April, Nigeria joined the world on lockdown. This disrupted every facet of our civilisation; companies shut down, some had to lay off staff to remain afloat, and the whole world went indoors. While some companies licked their wounds, others benefited from the pandemic. Platforms like Zoom and Netflix will always look back to the thick of the global lockdown with a sort of schadenfreude because, in that same period, their customer base spiked and their revenues surged. But what was the impact of the pandemic on the Nigerian Music Industry? Well, for the music industry—the Nigerian music industry—the impact of COVID-19 was drastic and revealing. On March 21, 2020, Brymo, a Nigerian alternative artist, announced the postponement of his live concert scheduled for March 28,

Buhari and the fear of another coup, war in Nigeria [Pulse Contributor's Opinion]

There are speculations that Buhari refused to replace the former Service Chiefs appointed in July 2015 because he believes certain elements are after him. As I concluded this essay, it occurred to me that it corresponds with the sixth year anniversary of Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari. He will leave office on May 29, 2023, after completing two four-year terms approved by the constitution. Curiously, in recent weeks, his government has issued direct and indirect alerts about "plans" by yet-to-be-disclosed persons to oust the retired General, from Katsina State, through undemocratic means. The presidency notified the public that some highly-placed members of the society were working against the President and pushing for his unceremonious exit. "Disgruntled religious and past political leaders" were accused of plotting to throw the country into crisis to compel a forceful and undemocratic change of leadership.
