How herdsmen invaded Ogun community to destroy and kill [Pulse Special Report]

According to the traditional leader of the community, herdsmen have been attacking and killing members of the community since 2006. On Sunday, February 14, 2021, as the rest of the world celebrated Valentine’s Day, Nigerians living in Asa, a settlement in the Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, had a close shave with death as gun-wielding herdsmen invaded their community. Asa is an agrarian community in the Yewa region of Ogun state. It is one of the many villages that share boundaries with the Republic of Benin in the local government. While its proximity to the francophone country through one of the porous borders is less than five kilometres, its distance to Ilaro, the adjudged capital of Yewaland is about 40 kilometres. Apart from the fact that a few people in the community own motorbikes, which some of them use for commercial purposes, there is little or no sign of modernism in Asa, Ibeku, Agbon-Ojodu, Iselu and other surrounding communities. Some of these communi

Ngige blasts NBS for unemployment data

Ngige says the national bureau of statistics data doesn't conform with global standard. Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has cast doubts on the authenticity, methodology and modalities used to retrieve the data churned quarterly by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). NBS' data on the nation's economy, inflation and unemployment have been grim and unflattering for the federal government, which depends on these data for national planning and budgetary allocation. In March, the NBS declared that 23 million Nigerians are now unemployed ; and that Nigeria's unemployment rate now stands at a worrying 33 percent. All of which has left Ngige fuming, especially because the data continues to indict the ministry he oversees. Ngige has now quoted the World Bank as saying the NBS data may be wrong and that the agency's methodology isn't at par with global best practices. "The federal government and the World Bank will hold a virtual meeting tod

Strengthen local govts rather than delist them, Jonathan tells NASS

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged the National Assembly to make laws that would strengthen Local Governments, make them autonomous and empowered to generate their own revenues. Jonathan stated this on Thursday, when the national and state executives of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) paid him a courtesy visit in his country home, Otuoke, Bayelsa.
