Tech: Burger King is (once again) trolling McDonald's with a cheeky clown-themed Halloween marketing push

Burger King is (once again) trolling McDonald's in a cheeky clown-themed Halloween campaign Burger King is trolling McDonald's yet again in a clown-themed Halloween marketing ad effort. The burger chain is offering customers wearing clown costumes free Whoppers this Halloween. The tagline of the campaign is "Come as a clown, eat like a king." Burger King and McDonald's may be arch rivals, but today, the King seems to be extending an olive branch to Ronald McDonald. Burger King is looking to capitalize on the popularity of clown costumes on Halloween by making clowns the center of its cheeky marketing campaign on the dress-up holiday — in a not-so-subtle dig at McDonald's. The fast food chain is offering free Whopper burgers to customers who show up at its restaurants wearing clown costumes on Halloween. The brand has created a 90-second digital ad to tout the offer and is also encouraging guests to post their scary clown costumes and tag the bra

Tech: The iPhone X is smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus, but it has the largest iPhone screen Apple has ever made (AAPL)

The iPhone X has the biggest iPhone screen you can buy. The iPhone model with the largest screen is the iPhone X, which has a 5.8-inch screen measured on the diagonal. But despite its larger screen, the iPhone X is smaller overall than the iPhone 8 Plus. Should you buy an iPhone X? It's a tricky question if you're in the market — the iPhone X is pricey, starting at $999, and Apple's other phones like the iPhone 8 are just as fast. But there's one big reason the iPhone X may make Apple's other iPhones seem old and outdated: its screen. The iPhone X actually features Apple's biggest phone display, measuring 5.8 inches on the diagonal, which is even bigger than the display on Apple's largest iPhone, the iPhone 8 Plus, which measures 5.5 inches. It turns out that the iPhone X has the largest iPhone screen that Apple has ever made. But because the iPhone X's design stretches the display nearly corner to corner — except for the sensor housing at

Falz: Rapper doesn’t get the Hip-hop respect, but it doesn’t really matter

Falz’s decision to make more inclusive music and push the culture is causing him disrespect, but it doesn't really matter. ‘You rappers should fix up your lives…you’re getting killed by the South…,” M.I Abaga declared on his new single. But for Falz , there’s nothing to fix. While the industry raved and ranted about Abaga’s stunt (and divisive wake-up call), one man who went about his business and dropped an album does not think his life needs fixing. Falz the bad guy gets a lot of disrespect as a rapper. The 27-year-old musician who makes music by delivering his rap in a multi-faceted format isn’t considered by ‘Hip-hop’ heads as a true rapper deserving of support and inclusion in the pantheon of Nigerian rap gods. And this is because of his style of music.   Style makes music in a unique fashion. He combines numerous elements that aren’t traditional Hip-hop to make striking music. Listening to a typical Falz record will throw up simplicity, humour, fusion and more. He

Kiss Daniel: ‘Yeba’s success is a victory for G-Worldwide and their no-collaboration policy

While G-Worldwide continues to receive criticism on its no-collaboration policy on social media, the success of Kiss Daniel will be interpreted as justification for it. I was in Sagamu, Ogun State over the weekend, to witness the town show support for Anthony Joshua, the British boxer whose roots stretch from the UK to the South-Western town. It was a madness. The town organised a huge viewing of Joshua’s fight with Carlos Takam. It was a huge carnival. People of all ages flocked out to witness their illustrious son punch sense into another boxer. Huge screens were set up, two top brands joined in the organisation, music blared from countless speakers, and if you smile at anyone, they would smile back. Over the past six months Anthony Joshua’s success has had a huge impact on the town, and I was here to bask in it. And then something of note happened. While we waited for the fight to begin, the DJ entertained with music from the usual suspects. The playlist was really decent; count

Tech: Horror movies tap into a primal fear instinct in your brain

Cinema can have a powerful effect. Using images and sound, the best horror directors are able to tap into a part of your brain that operates purely on instinct. Horror films can be so scary because they're able to bypass our knowledge that we're watching something and trigger a real fear reaction. Neuroscientists have started studying people when they watch films, and filmmakers are consistently able to trigger similar emotional reactions in viewers, especially with scary movies. As filmmakers get a better understanding of the science and technology improves, this effect will get even more powerful. It's October, the perfect time for scaring yourself with a spooky film. Some people adore the rush they get from watching a horror flick; others can't stand how filmmakers somehow worm their way into your consciousness, building up tension and then striking that moment of terror with a jump scare or with some creepy moment that seems to burn itself into your brain.

Tech: Microsoft's CEO says the biggest game of the year chose its cloud — here's what really happened (MSFT, AMZN)

"Playerunknown's Battlegrounds" is the biggest game of the year, and it's started using the Microsoft cloud in addition to Amazon's. Last week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds," the hottest game of 2017, is now running on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform. However, despite Nadella's remarks, "PUBG" is still using Amazon Web Services, Azure's biggest rival. Regardless, it could be a big win for Microsoft — the game is a large part of the Xbox One holiday sales push, and now it could help bolster Azure's appeal to the significant market for video games. When Microsoft reported earnings last week, CEO Satya Nadella highlighted that " PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds " — the hottest video game of 2017 — is now using the Microsoft Azure cloud platform to power online play. As Windows Central rightly notes , this is interesting because PUBG had previously

University Of Ibadan: VC explains why only 3500 will get admission out of 20,949

The VC said UI has the capacity to admit 7000 but will only consider 3500 in order to expand admission spaces for postgraduate students. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka has said only 3500 out of 20,949 Post-UTME candidates will be admitted. Olayinka who made the announcement on the University community radio Diamond FM, Ibadan on Monday, October 30, said 9,266 applicants out of the 20,949 candidates scored 50 and above in their Post UTME. The Vice-Chancellor further explained that the institution was given the opportunity to admit 7,000 candidates but because of its resolve to expand admission spaces for postgraduate students, it will only consider a few undergraduates. “ UI is the most competitive, we can only admit at most 3,500. I must also say that we are allowed to admit about 7,000. We have about 7,300 bed spaces. Another reason why we are admitting fewer undergraduates is because we want to expand post-graduates",  h

In Japan: Nine headless bodies found in Tokyo flat

According to local media, Shiraishi told police he had chopped up the bodies in a bathroom, while a saw was found in his room. Japanese police have found nine mutilated bodies hidden in containers with their heads cut off and flesh stripped in a suburban Tokyo flat, media reported Tuesday. Tokyo police have arrested 27-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi who reportedly confessed to hacking the flesh off the bodies and throwing it out with the trash, then sprinkling cat litter over the remains in an effort to cover up the evidence. According to local media, Shiraishi told police he had chopped up the bodies in a bathroom, while a saw was found in his room. The suspect reportedly told investigators he had "dumped cut flesh and organs in the trash," prompting fears he was a serial killer as police believe he killed all nine victims, according to NHK. Police and journalists swarmed around the nondescript apartment in the quiet residential neighbourhood of Zama, as locals struggled

Yingluck Shinawatra: Thailand revokes passports of exiled former PM

Yingluck's elder brother Thaksin, who was ousted in a 2006 coup, has been living in self-exile for years to avoid a graft conviction. Thailand has revoked the passports of ousted premier Yingluck Shinawatra, who has yet to publicly emerge since she slipped out of the country two months ago ahead of judgement day in her negligence trial, officials said Tuesday. The former prime minister, whose elected government was toppled in a 2014 coup, was sentenced to five years in prison in absentia last month for failing to stop graft in a rice policy. The verdict, which closed the curtain on her political career, was lambasted by Yingluck's supporters as a junta-backed effort to boot her out of Thai politics for good. "All of Yingluck's passports have been revoked now," Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai told reporters in Bangkok on Tuesday. "We don't know of her whereabouts, only reports that she is in United Kingdom but not exactly which city,&quo

In Hong Kong: Democracy activist found guilty of sandwich 'attack'

Ng, 40, chairman of political party the League of Social Democrats, was sentenced to three weeks in jail but released on bail pending an appeal. Hong Kong democracy activist Avery Ng was Tuesday found guilty of assault for throwing a sandwich towards the city's then-leader which hit a police officer. Ng, 40, chairman of political party the League of Social Democrats, was sentenced to three weeks in jail but released on bail pending an appeal. It was the latest in a series of cases against democracy activists which have led to accusations of interference in the judiciary as Beijing tightens its grip on the semi-autonomous city. Judge So Wai-tak said the sentence was a "deterrent" against what he described as "violent means" used in protests against government policies, although he acknowledged the fact that the weapon was a sandwich merited a shorter jail term. Afterwards Ng told reporters he believed the judicial system was being used by the city's Bei

In Pakistan: Men still killing women for 'honour', despite new law

Long-awaited legislation was finally passed three months later in a move cautiously hailed by women's rights activists. A year since new laws came into force aimed at stemming the flow of "honour killings", scores of young women in deeply conservative Pakistan are still being murdered by relatives for bringing shame on their family. The shocking murder of Pakistani social media star Qandeel Baloch by her brother last July turned the spotlight on an epidemic of so-called honour killings and sparked a fresh push to close loopholes allowing the killers to walk free. Long-awaited legislation was finally passed three months later in a move cautiously hailed by women's rights activists. But, more than a year on, lawyers and activists say honour killings are still occurring at an alarming pace. At least 280 such murders were recorded by the independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan from October 2016 to June of this year -- a figure believed to be underestim

Israel: Tensions rise after country blows up tunnel from Gaza

The seven men, from the armed wings of Gaza's rulers Hamas and allied group Islamic Jihad... Tensions rose Tuesday after an Israeli operation to blow up a tunnel from the Gaza Strip killed seven Palestinian militants in one of the deadliest incidents since a devastating 2014 war. The seven men, from the armed wings of Gaza's rulers Hamas and allied group Islamic Jihad, were killed Monday when Israel blew up the tunnel it said had crossed into its territory and was intended for attacks. They were being buried Tuesday in their respective neighbourhoods in the Gaza Strip. Hamas leader Ismail Haniya appeared at a funeral in central Gaza attended by a few thousand people, witnesses said, while senior Hamas figure Khalil al-Hayya spoke at one in the southern part of the strip. "(Hamas) knows how to manage the conflict with the enemy and how to get revenge and strike at the time and place that hurts the enemy," Hayya said, according to a statement. Hamas and Is

Facebook: Company denies eavesdropping on its users' conversations, again

The social network giants have refuted yet again to be untrue the rumours that they use smartphone mics to listen in on private conversations. Facebook has been rumoured to be eavesdropping on people's conversations, using the information it gets to serve ads accordingly, an allegation it has repeatedly denied. The users are said to believe this is so when they receive suspiciously timed promotional messages on the platform, especially when they didn’t go in search for such type of product anywhere online. Rob Goldman , the head of advertising at the social network, issued the denial in response to a question from the host of tech podcast Reply All. “I run ads product at Facebook. We don’t – and have never – used your microphone for ads. Just not true,” Goldman tweeted, maintaining the same stance for Instagram as well. The rumours appeared to have started in May 2014 when the company launched a feature called “Identify TV and Music” which listens for ambient noise when a u

Tech: I've been using the iPhone X for 18 hours, and I'm already sold (AAPL)

The iPhone X has a great design, and features like Face ID work as advertised. I've been testing the iPhone for a little less than a day. Overall, I enjoy the design and the new, larger screen. And I don't miss the home button. Despite some of the concerns over Face ID, it works flawlessly. I got to use the iPhone X only briefly when Apple unveiled it last month, but it was enough to convince me Apple was cooking up a hit . This week I got to spend more time with it, and I'm equally if not more impressed with what Apple pulled off. I've been using the iPhone X for a little less than a day, so I won't have a full review for you until early next week. But I do have a much better sense of how things work in the real world and outside the careful gaze of a bunch of Apple employees. Here are some first impressions after my roughly 18 hours with the iPhone X. Finally, a new design The latest trend in smartphones is to cram as much screen onto the front of

In Libya: At least 12 killed in east air strike

Jihadists in the conflict-torn country have frequently accused Haftar's main international backers, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, of participating in deadly raids. At least 12 people have been killed in an air strike in Libya's besieged eastern jihadist stronghold of Derna, a medical source said on Tuesday. Most of the victims, including women and children, are from the same family, the source at the Harish hospital said, adding that three people were left critically wounded by the bombing conducted Monday evening. It was not immediately clear who carried out the strike. The attack has not been claimed by forces loyal to strongman Khalifa Haftar , which have been besieging Derna for months and regularly conduct air strikes against the eastern city. Derna, some 900 kilometres (560 miles) east of Tripoli, was known for being a bastion of jihadists even before the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed longtime dictator Moamer Kadhafi. Haftar's forces are wagi
