University Of Ibadan: VC explains why only 3500 will get admission out of 20,949

University of Ibadan

The VC said UI has the capacity to admit 7000 but will only consider 3500 in order to expand admission spaces for postgraduate students.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka has said only 3500 out of 20,949 Post-UTME candidates will be admitted.

Olayinka who made the announcement on the University community radio Diamond FM, Ibadan on Monday, October 30, said 9,266 applicants out of the 20,949 candidates scored 50 and above in their Post UTME.

The Vice-Chancellor further explained that the institution was given the opportunity to admit 7,000 candidates but because of its resolve to expand admission spaces for postgraduate students, it will only consider a few undergraduates.

UI is the most competitive, we can only admit at most 3,500. I must also say that we are allowed to admit about 7,000. We have about 7,300 bed spaces. Another reason why we are admitting fewer undergraduates is because we want to expand post-graduates",  he said.

Commenting on the admission cut-off mark, Olayinka said the University of Ibadan has not set its cut off mark adding that

the 200 benchmark was only set as criteria for Post-UTME candidates in order to set a standard.

“I don’t even know what the cut off mark will be, the committee will meet and decide. Our motive is to improve the quality'' he said.

“About 60,000 candidates picked UI, 20,949 sat for the Post UTME, 9,266 scored 50 and above (which represents about 44.2 percent) in the examination.

“In this figure, we have more female than male this year, that means male need to be empowered. The highest score was 86 percent.

“We have to consider merit which is 45 percent, the locality which is 30 percent, all the states of the federation is catchment area of UI, then ELDS.

“UI, UNILAG, Benin, Ife and UNN is using 200. I think we should set a standard, in UK, students don’t repeat class, they know that all of them are not university materials. Some will go to university while some will go to vocational schools.

The Vice Chancellor during the controversial policy of JAMB had vowed that he would not admit any students who scored less than 200 in the Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examinations.

Tiaga faced charges brought by the EFCC, alleging her involvement in receiving payments from Process & Industrial Development (P&ID) to manipulate the 20-year gas supply and processing agreement (GSPA) against Nigeria. The EFCC claims that these illicit payments were made through her daughter and persisted even after her retirement. The accusations extend to Tiaga's purported failure to adhere to due process while providing legal counsel on the GSPA. Initially facing eight counts of fraud, she was remanded to Suleja prison in 2019, later granted bail, and the charges were expanded to 13 counts. As the trial progressed, the prosecution p
