Nigeria marks it 60th anniversary as an independent nation on October 1st, 2020 and just as the country has witnessed evolution with every year, one sector that has enjoyed growth with every decade is the music industry. Nigerian music is globally courted due to the rise of the Afrobeats genre that has seen the evolution of our indigenous pop sound and style on the international scene. Names like D'banj , Davido , Wizkid , 2face Idibia , Yemi Alade and Tiwa Savage represent faces of the leaders of the generation flying the flag high, but this acceptance didn't exactly happen overnight. It is as a result of refined genres and sounds that have been forged over many decades. Charting the history of Nigerian music is a long road to travel, considering the influences of western sounds that played a major role in shaping our sound pre

Burna Boy can’t be Fela one minute and not Fela the next, he needs to pick a struggle [Pulse Editor’s Opinion]

Those who call on Burna Boy to become the voice of his people understand that he's become way too big to protest from an air-conditioned studio. Omoyele Sowore who publishes Sahara Reporters, has caused quite a stir and ruffled quite some feathers on social media platform, Twitter, after he called out Burna Boy for not leading any protests since he became a global brand, even though the Afro-fusion singer considers himself something of a modern day revolutionary. “Hello @burnaboy, everywhere I turn people describe you as a revolutionary musician, the foreign media even celebrate you and compare you to Fela Kuti, but I am yet to see you lead anyone to a police station carrying a coffin for head of state! Join #Oct1stProtest #RevolutionNow,” Sowore tweeted at Burna on Tuesday, September 29, 2020. twitter.com Burna’s response was swift and punchy. He isn’t Fela, he said, and shouldn’t be coerced into acting like Fela. “Well. I am NOT FELA. I Have said that countless times. But

Former commissioner AbdulLateef declares for Lagos governorship in 2023

Dr Abdul-Hakeem Abdul-Lateef, a former Commissioner for Home Affairs, has declared his intention to contest for office of the Governor of Lagos State in the 2023 election. Abdul-Lateef made the declaration during the inauguration of “Iyepe 2023 We Fit Do Am” project, a movement meant to create political awareness among Lagosians. “There is apathy in the county; not so many people are involved in voting these days. It has been going down in Lagos State. “Out of about 24 million people in Lagos State, during the last voting exercise we witness less than 1.5 million voters. “You can see that there is gradual level of disinterestedness by the populace. So we have started this movement to raise political awareness to encourage people to have hope that we can have transformation. “By the time we encourage more people to participate in politics, we believe that things will change for the better by the grace of God,” he said. According to him, “Iyepe” is a symbol of unity which reminds

CAN urges government to overhaul country’s security system

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Enugu State chapter, has called on government at all level to overhaul the country’s security system to guarantee the protection of lives and properties of the citizens. The Chairman of the association, Rev. Ositadinma Edeh, made the call on Tuesday on Tuesday in a statement he signed to mark Nigeria at 60. Edeh said that Nigeria at 60 called for celebration not minding the numerous challenges facing the nation. He reminded those in authority that the Most High was sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gave them to anyone he wished, knowing that the positions of authority were given to them by God. The clergyman urged them to be guided by the biblical injunction in 1 Corinthians 4:2, which says now it is required that those who had been given trust must prove faithful. Edeh explained that if all in different positions of authority in this country could see themselves from this divine point of view, there would be respect for the rule

Sowore vs. Burna Boy: The emulation of Fela or otherwise [Pulse Editor’s Opinion]

Fela was an outlier and we appreciate him for it, but most people don’t have an appetite for such consistent acts of activism and that should be absolutely fine. Fela is a shadow that hovers above Nigeria like rumblings of a distant thunder. He is distant but his spirit lives on. He is the greatest Nigerian artist to have ever lived and his legacy transcends the music and it has earned itself a place in the Nigerian political zeitgeist. International media and international practitioners look to ‘Abami Eda’ as a quintessential symbol of blackness. His greatness gets extolled by those who only knew about him, years after his death. He lost a significant amount of his wealth to fighting for/against what he believes in - pan-Africanism, basic human rights and bad governance. In return, he lost his mother, got raided multiple times, lost a chunk of what could have been his wealth, earned a complicated relationship with his son and died of HIV. The “Ehwe Papa” singer on Tuesday, September 29, took to Instagram to share a new video wearing a sheer see-through crop top. She appears having fun while rocking the dress, however, she ended up exposing her bare chest which also shows that she used tapes to cover her nipples. This isn’t the first time the Kumawood star, who has been gaining notoriety with her growing risqué personality on social media, has gone completely nude for the gram. Claudia Lumor and Vim Lady were our worst-dressed celebrities at the 2020 Ghana Women of the Year Honours

We were disappointed with the looks these two celebrities gave us. Over the weekend, we experienced a colourful and exciting event at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel when Glitz Africa celebrated some women in Ghana who use their expertise, position and influence to inspire others to make a difference in driving other women forward. For an event like this, there definitely was no room for wardrobe malfunction or bad hair day. Either you avoided the red carpet or stepped out in the best ensemble. Of course, we aren't saying celebrities should break the bank to look stunning on the red carpet but a simple and gorgeous look won't be too much to ask for. Meji makes his entrance with, 'The One' [EP Review]

While he aims for a lot of things and he aims to live long, he doesn't want to see age 95. It's 2017 and 22-year-old Meji had just released, 'Fix Up Your Life.' It was a reply to MI Abaga's 2017 viral track, 'You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives' which laid a claim to being Nigeria's version of Kendrick Lamar's 'Kontrol' moment. While other rappers had replied Abaga, a little known rapper named Meji threw his hat in the ring. His skill wasn't as sharp or full-formed, his alluring technique was still growing and his delivery was some way off base. But one thing he had in excess was confidence. In a lot of ways, he was like Burna Boy in the early 2010s without a self-destruct button. He replied Abaga and Abaga noticed. That seemed like just another moment in the grand scheme, but it wasn't. That record was the entrance of a talented, young Nigerian rapper who just wanted to make music and be happy with his music. Born in '[19]
