Joshua Borokinni: UNIBEN student wins essay competition involving 12,300 contestants

A student of the University of Benin, Joshua Borokinni has emerged one of the winners of the 2017 Commonwealth Essay Competition.

Borokinni emerged second runner-up in the Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition which involved 12,300 youths from commonwealth countries.

He won the bronze medal after Annika Turon-Semmens from Australia and Hiya Chowdhury of India, who bagged the gold and silver medals, respectively in the senior category of the competition.

Borokinni was the only Nigerian and African who participated in the competition this year.

 

After learning about the result of the competition, the young student of UNIBEN said the award will push him to more exceptional things.

“This award will definitely push me further to do more exceptional things that will showcase Nigeria and Africa to the world,”

The Royal Commonwealth Essay Competition also known as the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition is reportedly the oldest writing competition in the world.

A commonwealth for Peace, which was the theme for the just concluded competition is crafted around topics that challenge young writers under 18 to consider peace at all levels from the personal to the political to the pan-Commonwealth.

However, in recognition of the contestants' achievements, Punch reports that the winners and runners-up will visit London and participate in a series of educational and cultural events scheduled to hold in November.
