PHOTOS: Gov Dapo appoints Anthony Joshua Ogun State sports ambassador

Boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been named Ogun State’s Sports Ambassador by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Abeokuta.

The appointment was formalised with a letter presented to Joshua.

Praising the 35-year-old boxer, Governor Abiodun highlighted his dedication and discipline as values that resonate with Ogun State.

“Today, we officially confirm you as our sports ambassador,” Abiodun said.

“We also want to request that you come back to light up the Gateway Sports Festival torch next May.”

In a bid to strengthen Joshua’s ties to his roots, the governor announced plans to build an Anthony Joshua Indoor Boxing Ring in Abeokuta.

“This will ensure you visit more frequently,” Abiodun added.

He further revealed that the state would gift Joshua a brand-new house in Sagamu, his hometown.

Joshua expressed deep gratitude for the gesture and the opportunities accompanying his new role.

He said, “This is a great honour, and I am excited about the chance to inspire young athletes in Ogun State.”

Joshua also complimented the governor’s daughter, describing her as “amazing and intelligent.”

The Gateway Games, postponed to May 2025, will see Joshua lighting the festival torch, further cementing his ambassadorial role in promoting sports development in the state.

This appointment marks a significant step in aligning Ogun State’s sports vision with global excellence.
