Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has strongly opposed President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, warning they could lead to national unrest.
Speaking on Thursday, December 27, during a visit from the Christian community at the Bauchi State Government House, Mohammed criticised the tax bills currently before the National Assembly, describing them as detrimental to Northern Nigeria.
“These tax reforms are not good for Northern Nigeria,” Mohammed asserted. “We won’t have the resources to pay salaries or build roads. The presidency must listen to these cries; otherwise, they are calling for anarchy.”
As chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum, Mohammed stressed the need for inclusive governance and urged Tinubu to avoid policies that favour specific regions.
“It’s not about religion or tribe; it’s about national unity and good leadership,” he said.
Governor Mohammed also highlighted that Northern governors and the National Economic Council have previously rejected the tax bills, which have faced mounting criticism since their introduction to the National Assembly.
In contrast, President Tinubu, during his first Presidential Media Chat, defended the reforms as necessary to revitalise Nigeria’s economy. He maintained that the bills are a crucial step toward economic sustainability.
The proposed tax reforms have sparked polarising reactions nationwide, with stakeholders questioning their impact on equitable resource distribution.
Mohammed’s remarks underline growing regional concerns over the administration’s economic policies.
