The Federal Government has expressed deep sympathy for the families of victims who lost their lives in recent stampedes during food distribution activities in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija.
Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, described the incidents as "deeply saddening" and extended prayers to the affected families.
“These tragedies underscore the importance of proper crowd management, especially during festive charity events,” Idris stated.
The Minister urged event organisers to strictly follow directives from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and to liaise with local police formations to implement effective crowd control and security measures.
He emphasised the vital role of collaboration between the police and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in preventing such disasters during the Yuletide season.
Minister warns against politicising yuletide tragedies
Idris also appealed to politicians and stakeholders to avoid politicising the tragedies. He criticised claims linking the incidents to economic reforms initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“Similar occurrences have happened in the past, before the current administration. Linking these tragedies to the President’s reforms is unfounded and disingenuous,” he said.
The Minister reiterated that the reforms aim to reposition Nigeria’s economy for sustainable growth and alleviate the plight of vulnerable citizens without causing distress.
Calling for unity during the festive season, Idris urged Nigerians to prioritise peace, goodwill, and joy while avoiding preventable tragedies.
The government’s advisory comes as the nation prepares for heightened activities during the Yuletide, underscoring the collective responsibility to safeguard lives.
