Buhari: 7 ways Pastor Bakare attacked president

Here are the major talking points from that interview: 1. Fulani herdsmen Bakare says the president has handled the herdsmen crises poorly. “With all the powers at the disposal of the federal government, to allow Nigerians to be killing each other this way is unfortunate”, Bakare says.   "Some of this could be avoided. You are now preaching peaceful coexistence to farmers to fold their hands and watch the people who are coming to take their lands”, he adds derisively. 2. Cattle colonies One way the federal government proposes to deal with the herdmen/farmer clashes is to establish cattle colonies across the States in order to curtail open grazing. Bakare says ‘colony’ as a word is offensive and repugnant. "I’m hea...

Davido: How OBO has remixed ‘FIA’ twice, but given the songs away to other people

Davido has been remixing ‘FIA’, with help from producer Fresh VDM of course. But he isn't releasing them with his chest. “Shuku Shaker, Aya Shoemaker” You would understand the magnitude of that line when you are in a club and the DJ stops the record just at that spot to urge you to participate and scream out your lungs. That’s how much Davido’s ‘FIA’ became a huge record. It isn’t just a personal story mined from the depths of pain and loss, it’s a mega, super hit record which probably dominated the country better than his earlier one ‘ If’ . There’s nowhere in this country where there is a celebration, and you won’t find people telling Caroline to “save your drama” and exclude them from her soap opera. As a follow-up to the record, we had an interview with the producer, Fresh VDM , who has seen his stock rise considerably since scoring that hit record. And he did confirm that prior to the release of ‘FIA’, they had recorded a few other songs, which he thought would bec...

State Of The Music: What’s the best form of ‘success’ in the Nigerian music industry?

Always remember: the money is fleeting, fame is unsteady, and the adoration of fans never endures forever. The concept of success in Nigerian music is a very ambiguous subject, and often, when it is discussed, we find its meaning aligning with what the survivalist Nigerian society offers us as the ideal. Nigeria is a hugely consumerist and materialistic nation which depends heavily on the possession of material wealth and money. In this country, a man is referred to as successful if he has money, and wears it proudly on his body. The simple CEO who runs a very profitable business, lives in a bungalow, and drives a moderate car will never be seen as successful. But his employee who talks a big game, and drives an expensive car bought from his salary will most likely have the ‘successful’ tag bestowed upon him. In Nigerian music, success is pretty much judged with the same yardstick. The artistes with the flashiest of lifestyles, which are generously documented on social media are re...

Obasanjo: 3 things we learnt when Buhari met ex president after bitter letter

Obasanjo and Buhari recently met in Ethiopia. Here are three things their meeting taught us. Maybe we shouldn’t read too much into the meeting between Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and President Muhammadu Buhari in Addis Ababa, recently. That meeting and the photo-op that followed, provided enough material for social and mainstream media chatter because it was their first after Obasanjo’s stinker of a letter. There were enough broad smiles and hearty laughter to go around as present and former leaders posed for the cameras and cracked jokes.   Here are three things we picked from the images: 1. The old guard has really held Nigeria hostage In that picture were Obasanjo, Abdulsalami Abubakar and Buhari; who between them have been running Nigeria, dispensing patronage and deciding who governs where, since 1960. Ibrahim Babangida was perhaps the one noticeable absentee from the images. These guys haven’t been able to fix Africa’s most populous country since the colonialists fled....

Pulse Opinion: Why just getting your PVC is not enough

Getting a voter's card is one thing, making a well-informed decision with it is an entirely different cup of tea. In Nigeria, currently, a Permanent Voter's Card (PVC) is the holy grail. From religious leaders across the country to business owners (especially on the internet), to so-called social media influencers, and opposition leaders, the clamour for Nigerians to get their PVC is unprecedented. At the root of this clamour is an ugly reality that has chipped away at the Nigerian consciousness for the past three years (or longer, depending on who you ask). Many of the leading advocates for citizens to be more involved in the country's politics have relentlessly pointed fingers at the arguably disastrous tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari . It is this gnawing exasperation with the status quo that has led to former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili 's Red Card movement and former President Olusegun Obasanjo 's deliberately vague Coalition for Nig...
