Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin has dismissed speculations surrounding his possible emergence as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 elections, reaffirming his absolute loyalty to the President.
Speaking during a media briefing on the forthcoming zonal public hearings of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, which he chairs, Jibrin said now is not the time for political distractions.
“Mr. President is my political father. You’ll be surprised if I start telling you what he has done for me and my people.
"So, whenever he asks me to do something when the time comes, I’ll do it. I’m very loyal to him. If the time comes and he says I should work with him, I will do it, whatever he asks me to do,” Barau stated.
The comment comes amidst growing speculation about Tinubu’s choice of a running mate in the next general election.
Barau noted that while several groups had approached him about the matter, he had cautioned them against premature politicking.
“I told those groups frankly, I don’t know them. I thank them for believing in me, but I told them instead of wasting energy on things that are not relevant now, channel your resources to supporting the President. When the time comes, we’ll play politics. But this time is for governance,” he said
On legislative matters, Barau revealed that the Senate Constitution Review Committee is currently reviewing 59 bills and 31 proposals.
He invited Nigerians to submit public memoranda to enrich the process.
He also announced the schedule for the zonal public hearings, which will be held across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones: South-South (Ikot Ekpene), North-West (Kano), South-West (Lagos), North-Central (Jos), North-East (Maiduguri), and South-East (Enugu).
Each hearing will be chaired by senior Senate leaders.
