Police condemn VeryDarkMan over unauthorised use of uniform, begin probe

The Police said while it recognises and supports the creativity of young Nigerian content creators, it strongly cautions against the misuse of Police uniforms or symbols.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has condemned in strongest terms the unauthorised use of its official uniform and accoutrements by controversial blogger-cum-activist, Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM) in a video posted on his social media platforms.

In a video that has now gone viral, the blogger was seen introducing himself as CSP VeryDarkMan and Nigeria's number one online police. He pledged his dedication to sanitising the social media space by using his platform to stand against oppressors, especially online vendors.

Unlike the regular police who usually adhere to a lot of procedures and protocols, VDM said he will go straight to tarnish the names of offenders brought before him with evidence of their wrongdoing.

Police begin investigation of VeryDarkman video.

However, reacting in a statement on Saturday, October 26, 2024, the NPF police said an investigation into the circulating video had been launched.

“The Force unequivocally disassociates itself from this unauthorised portrayal and has launched a full investigation to determine the source of the Police gear used, as well as the authority under which he acted.

“It is important to remind the public that the unauthorised use of Police uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements constitutes a criminal offence, as stipulated in Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law, and is subject to strict penalties,” the statement read in part.

The Police said while it recognises and supports the creativity of young Nigerian content creators, it strongly cautions against the misuse of Police regalia or, symbols and insignia.

It stressed that the unauthorised use of these items undermines the values and integrity of the NPF and will not be tolerated.

NYSC Mobilisation & Academic Standards – Raising quality or adding pressure on students?

On September 29, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a reform linking the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process to the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD). By invoking Sections 2(4)(4) and 16(1)(C) of the NYSC Act, Tinubu stated that no graduate, whether from a Nigerian or foreign institution, will be mobilised for or exempted from NYSC without proof of compliance with the NERD policy. In a common man's understanding, the Federal Government has announced that Nigerian students must now submit their final-year projects or thesis before they can be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This policy aims to improve academic standards, ensuring that no student skips essential academic requirements before entering the NYSC scheme . On the surface, this sounds like a laudable idea, but a deeper look reveals a different reality. In many universities, students are allowed to graduate and mobilised for NYSC  ...
