We're not afraid to rerun election – PDP Zamfara

Appealing to APC members and supporters, Maijega urged them to turn out in large numbers to secure Governor Dauda Lawal's position.

The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence in securing a significant triumph in the impending rerun election, as directed by the Court of Appeal.

Buhari Maijega, the spokesperson for the State's PDP, conveyed this optimism during a telephone interview with reporters in Gusau, the state capital.

Maijega affirmed the party's belief that Governor Dauda Lawal would emerge victorious in the rerun election, citing the substantial lead Lawal held in the previous governorship election.

According to him, Lawal was ahead by over 65,000 votes against his APC opponent, former Governor Bello Mattawalle.

He noted that the total votes to be contested in the three affected local government areas, where the rerun election is slated, were not even approaching 100,000.

"It would be very impossible for the APC to secure all the votes in the forthcoming rerun election," Maijega confidently asserted.

He pointed to potential security challenges that might deter voters from turning out massively, particularly in rural areas where polling units had been impacted by banditry.

Governor Lawal's substantial lead in the previous election gives him a strong chance of success, Maijega contended. He hinted at the possibility of challenging the Appeal Court's judgment at the Supreme Court, suggesting a formidable legal battle for Mattawalle.

Appealing to APC members and supporters, Maijega urged them to turn out in large numbers to secure Governor Dauda Lawal's position. The rerun election is scheduled for a few polling units in Maradun, Bukkuyum, and Birnin Magaji local government areas.

"Even if the PDP did not actively campaign, I am very optimistic that Dr Dauda Lawal will still garner additional votes in those three local governments and retain his governorship position. I am appealing to our supporters to remain calm. We will, by the grace of God, sail through," Maijega concluded.

NYSC Mobilisation & Academic Standards – Raising quality or adding pressure on students?

On September 29, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a reform linking the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process to the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD). By invoking Sections 2(4)(4) and 16(1)(C) of the NYSC Act, Tinubu stated that no graduate, whether from a Nigerian or foreign institution, will be mobilised for or exempted from NYSC without proof of compliance with the NERD policy. In a common man's understanding, the Federal Government has announced that Nigerian students must now submit their final-year projects or thesis before they can be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This policy aims to improve academic standards, ensuring that no student skips essential academic requirements before entering the NYSC scheme . On the surface, this sounds like a laudable idea, but a deeper look reveals a different reality. In many universities, students are allowed to graduate and mobilised for NYSC  ...
