Peter Obi rejects attending swearing-in ceremony of president-elect Tinubu

This comes amidst speculations that Obi and his supporters, Obidients, were planning a protest near Eagle Square.

In a recent statement, Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, expressed his reluctance to attend the upcoming swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on behalf of Obi, his aide, Tai Obasi stated, "I don't know where these reports are coming from. We have no knowledge of any planned protest or the individuals behind it. However, I can assert categorically that my principal is not aware of anything of the sort."

Obi's rebuttal comes amidst speculations that the former governor of Anambra State and his supporters from the Obidient movement were planning a protest near Eagle Square to express their discontent with the Federal Government's insistence on proceeding with Tinubu's inauguration.

Obasi continued, "While it is true that Obi's supporters, known as Obidient, may occasionally act independently despite our calls for calm, they are motivated by their frustration. They are dissatisfied with how everything unfolded, with a sense of manipulation against Obi, who has instilled great hope in them. They have faithfully followed and supported him throughout."

When asked about the possibility of Obi attending Tinubu's inauguration, Obi's aide replied, "My principal is a humble and reasonable man who always seeks peace and unity in the country at any cost. However, it would be extremely unusual for him to attend the ceremony of a man whose election victory he is currently challenging in court."

Obasi added, "My principal cannot engage in such strange and unreasonable behavior. I cannot confirm whether he has received an invitation to the swearing-in ceremony, but I can assure you that you will not find him there."

NYSC Mobilisation & Academic Standards – Raising quality or adding pressure on students?

On September 29, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a reform linking the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process to the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD).
