ALGON rejects dissolution of democratically elected LGs, LCDAs in Oyo

The Association of Local Governments and Nigeria (ALGON), Oyo State Chapter has rejected the dissolution of democratically elected Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), describing it as unconstitutional.

The ALGON Chairman, Chief Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye in a statement on Thursday in Ibadan, described the decision as unconstitutional, unwise, unexpected and too hasty for a new government that is yet to find its feet.

NAN reports that Gov. Oluseyi Makinde on Wednesday in a statement issued by his Chief of Staff, Oyebisi Ilaka, announced the dissolution of the 33 local governments and 35 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Makinde yesterday Wednesday, May 29, 2019 ordered that all local government and LCDAs chairmen handover to their Heads of Local Government Administration (HLA) or most Senior Directors.

He also directed that embargo be placed on all local and state government accounts until further directives.

The association said that the action of the governor was a contempt of a subsisting court injunction restraining any dissolution of the councils as ordered by Justice A. A. Aderemi of Oyo State High Court on May 6.

It appealed to all duly elected local government chairmen, councilors and citizens in the respective councils to remain calm and be peaceful.

NAN reports that also dissolved were board of agencies and corporations.

NYSC Mobilisation & Academic Standards – Raising quality or adding pressure on students?

On September 29, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a reform linking the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process to the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD). By invoking Sections 2(4)(4) and 16(1)(C) of the NYSC Act, Tinubu stated that no graduate, whether from a Nigerian or foreign institution, will be mobilised for or exempted from NYSC without proof of compliance with the NERD policy. In a common man's understanding, the Federal Government has announced that Nigerian students must now submit their final-year projects or thesis before they can be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This policy aims to improve academic standards, ensuring that no student skips essential academic requirements before entering the NYSC scheme . On the surface, this sounds like a laudable idea, but a deeper look reveals a different reality. In many universities, students are allowed to graduate and mobilised for NYSC  ...
