Cavani beats Ronaldo, Messi to Golden Foot award

Edinson Cavani

Cavani has been rewarded for his achievements over the course of his career with the Golden Foot award.

Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani has emerged the winner of the 2018 Golden Foot award beating Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona's Lionel Messi to the award.

Cavani was victorious among the 10 nominees for the award which was held in Monaco on Tuesday, October 30.

Not as prestigious at the Ballon D’ or, the Golden Foot award is organised by the World Champions Club.

Unlike most awards, the Golden Foot Award recognizes the achievements of active professional footballers who are above the game of 28.

The winners of the award are determined by the votes from the public, media and the organisers.

Despite the prolific nature of Messi and Ronaldo, Cavani beat the two superstars and his own international teammate Luis Suarez to the award.

Now 31-years-old, Cavani made his debut in professional football for home side Danubio before moving to Italian Serie A giants Palermo in 2007.

He has since played for Napoli and is now with reigning Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain where he has won multiple league and cup titles.

In the international scene, his greatest achievement will be playing a part with the Uruguay team that won the 2007 Copa America and progressed to the semifinal of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

NYSC Mobilisation & Academic Standards – Raising quality or adding pressure on students?

On September 29, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a reform linking the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process to the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD). By invoking Sections 2(4)(4) and 16(1)(C) of the NYSC Act, Tinubu stated that no graduate, whether from a Nigerian or foreign institution, will be mobilised for or exempted from NYSC without proof of compliance with the NERD policy. In a common man's understanding, the Federal Government has announced that Nigerian students must now submit their final-year projects or thesis before they can be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). On the surface, this sounds like a laudable idea, but a deeper look reveals a different reality. In many universities, students are allowed to graduate and mobilised for NYSC  ...
