Issa Diop: Barcelona line up Toulouse defender as possible Umtiti replacement

Issa Diop

Barcelona signed Samuel Umtiti in the 2016/17 season from Lyon.

Barcelona has line up Toulouse defender Issa Diop as a possible replacement for compatriot Samuel Umtiti.

Barcelona signed Umtiti in the 2016/17 season from Lyon under Luis Enrique and he has put in impressive performances which have not gone unnoticed displacing Javier Mascherano in central defence.

Umtiti has a £50million clause for his release and has plenty clubs willing to pay for his services.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, Barcelona has reportedly held contractual talks with Umtiti’s representatives for a higher wage increment, but there is repeated interest from several clubs such as Premier League outfit Manchester United.

The report states that Barcelona has now made contact with Umtiti’s compatriot Issa Diop who is regarded as a promising defender in the French league.

Barcelona are reportedly looking for alternatives not just for Umtiti but also a possible departure of Thomas Vermaelen in the summer transfer window.

Diop is seen by Barcelona as an adequate replacement at just 21-years-old, is 6ft3, has good pace and is highly rated.

Barcelona has also identified Schalke’s Thilo Kehler and Dayot Upamecano of RB Leipzig as possible transfer targets.

The report states that if an agreement cannot be reached with Umtiti’s representatives Barcelona may replace him with Diop.
