GAP: Retail giant applauded for featuring a mother breastfeeding her son in new ad

GAP advert shows a nursing mother

Nigerian model, Adaora Akubilo is photographed breastfeeding her son Arinze in ground-breaking advert for American retailer, Gap.

A photograph showing a woman breastfeeding her young child posted by retail giant Gap has been widely applauded. The US clothing empire published two photos from a new ad campaign on its Instagram account and has received a flood of positive comments about the heart-warming image.

The ad promotes night shirts for the brand and shows a mother nursing her toddler in a bedroom. The Nigerian US-based model model featured in the post, Adaora Akubilo, is seen breastfeeding her 1-year-old son, Arinze.

Both mother and son were booked for the sleepwear shoot but the breastfeeding moment was a serendipitous one, says Akubilo.

She told the Chicago Tribune that the shoot temporarily stopped after Arinze needed to feed, but the photographer asked if they could capture the moment, which have since become key to the campaign.

Akubilo said: "I was so happy. I felt it was affirming."

The model has since written on her own Instagram account: 'I am the world’s proudest mama holding my little star. I felt like I was doing something wrong. Our society in particular is not very supportive of women who nurse after a certain age.'

Nearly 35,000 people have now liked the serene-looking image, with many commenting on the post.

The breast-feeding debate has been one that has raged on for years with many calling public breastfeeding inapporporite. It's refreshing to see a big company take such a normalised view of something which fosters a beautiful bond between mother and child.

NYSC Mobilisation & Academic Standards – Raising quality or adding pressure on students?

On September 29, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved a reform linking the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process to the National Policy for the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD). By invoking Sections 2(4)(4) and 16(1)(C) of the NYSC Act, Tinubu stated that no graduate, whether from a Nigerian or foreign institution, will be mobilised for or exempted from NYSC without proof of compliance with the NERD policy. In a common man's understanding, the Federal Government has announced that Nigerian students must now submit their final-year projects or thesis before they can be mobilised for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This policy aims to improve academic standards, ensuring that no student skips essential academic requirements before entering the NYSC scheme . On the surface, this sounds like a laudable idea, but a deeper look reveals a different reality. In many universities, students are allowed to graduate and mobilised for NYSC  ...
